The Stormlight Archive Codex

Nale

He wields division with a zealot's fire, enforcing an order that brooks no hesitation.

Nale, known publicly as Nalan (or simply Nale), is one of the ten Heralds of the Almighty in the cosmere's Roshar system. As the Herald of Zeal, he embodies an intense, often manic drive to prepare for war and enforce discipline, viewing hesitation as a fatal flaw that endangers society. While many Heralds have abandoned their posts or succumbed to madness during the Desolations, Nale remains uniquely active on Roshar, having taken it upon himself to hunt down those who break oaths and enforce ancient laws, driven by an unyielding belief that humanity must be rigorously prepared for the return of the Voidbringers.

Lore & Background

His connection to the Heralds is complicated by his knowledge of their true nature and the cycle of torment they endure. Unlike some who deny the truth, Nale accepts the burden of the Oathpact with a grim determination that borders on obsession. He has spent centuries preparing for the final Desolation, believing that the world is too weak to survive without his intervention. This has led him to act as judge, jury, and executioner, often bypassing local laws in favor of what he perceives as higher justice, even if it means killing innocents or breaking promises to maintain the greater order.

In Their Own Story

Nale’s presence is felt long before he appears, his influence weaving through the Skybreaker trials in *Oathbringer*. He confronts Szeth-son-of-Szeth to test the Assassin in White's oaths, later presiding over Dalinar Kholin during the trial for Adolin as a representative of justice. In *Rhythm of War*, he leads the Skybreakers into battle against Odium’s forces, his authority absolute even as he grapples with the truth of the Desolations. He does not merely observe; he intervenes, shifting gravity to crush threats and binding oaths with a severity that terrifies allies and enemies alike.

Reader's Guide

Nale serves as a primary antagonist, representing the dark side of order and the danger of absolute justice without compassion. His arc is defined by his refusal to let go of the past, even when it means destroying the present. He acts as the de facto leader of the Skybreakers, a group he founded to hunt down those who break their oaths or threaten the stability of Roshar. His powers include Gravitation and Adhesion, allowing him to manipulate gravity and bind objects together, which he uses for both combat and execution.

His defining moments reveal a man torn between his duty to the Oathpact and the reality of a changing world. He is willing to sacrifice everything, including his own humanity, to ensure the Heralds are ready when the Voidbringers return. This obsession makes him unpredictable and dangerous, as he often operates outside the law he claims to uphold. Throughout the series, his actions drive significant conflict, challenging protagonists like Kaladin and Szeth to question whether true justice can exist without cruelty.
