Long before the current era of fractured kingdoms, Roshar endured a hellish cycle of Desolations, invasions by the Voidbringers that threatened to extinguish all light. To counter this, the Heralds established ten orders of Knights Radiant, each bound to specific spren and granted mastery over two of the ten fundamental Surges. These warriors were the apex of Rosharan power: Windrunners who wielded Adhesion and Gravitation to scale walls and defy gravity, Edgedancers who mastered Division and Abrasion to slice through stone or move with impossible grace, and Skybreakers who commanded gravity itself.

Their reign ended in the Recreance, a cataclysm born not of enemy fire, but of profound despair. Convinced that their divine Heralds had abandoned them to eternal torment, every living Radiant simultaneously renounced their oaths. They fled their Nahel bonds and discarded their Shardplate, leaving their spren to wither or twist into madness. The magic evaporated, the plate crumbled to dust, and the Heralds were left trapped in Damnation, doomed to return again and again without their champions.

Now, the cycle stirs anew. Modern individuals—like a bridge four sergeant bonding an honorspren named Syl, or a scribe forging a pact with a cryptic known as Pattern—are unknowingly rekindling the ancient arts. Yet they walk a razor's edge; the world remembers the betrayal of the Recreance, and these new knights must prove that their oaths are stronger than history's fear.
