The Unmade's Campaigns

Nine shadows of a broken god seek to shatter the world's soul.

The Unmade's Campaigns denote the cyclical, millennia-spanning offensives launched by nine ancient Splinters of Odium to subjugate Roshar under his dominion. Far from mere beasts, these entities are fractured shards of a god’s will—corrupted avatars embodying specific concepts of destruction, such as madness, decay, or the shattering of oaths. Their campaigns systematically corrupt the Heralds’ allies, warp local cultures into grotesque reflections of their own nature, and drive toward the Desolation's ultimate objective: Odium’s permanent return to Roshar.

Unlike traditional armies that fight for territory or resources, these entities wage war on the very fabric of reality and the human mind. They operate through powerful proxies known as Fused, ancient souls trapped in new bodies, who lead the forces of the enemy during each Desolation. The campaigns are cyclical, occurring roughly every few thousand years, though the most recent one, marked by the Everstorm's arrival, has broken previous patterns by manifesting without the warning of the Heralds' return.

Lore & Background

In ancient history, following the Shattering of Adonalsium, Odium Splintered himself. While retaining most power on Yolen, he sent nine fragments to Roshar as his generals and agents of chaos. Each Unmade commands a unique domain; some drive men mad with whispers, others corrupt the land or bind souls. They are the architects of the Desolations—eras where the Heralds failed or abandoned their posts, nearly extinguishing humanity.

The nature of these campaigns has shifted over time. In ancient eras, they were often direct military conquests led by terrifying Fused generals. However, in modern times, their tactics have become more insidious. They work through manipulation, turning allies against one another and exploiting the weaknesses of the Knights Radiant. The Unmade do not just kill; they break the spirit of Roshar so that even if the body survives, the soul is lost to despair or madness.

In Their Own Story

The highwind howled across the Shattered Plains, carrying a scent that was not rain or dust, but something rotting and sweet. A soldier stood before an empty campfire, eyes wide as shadows between the stones began to writhe without light. A voice like grinding stone whispered directly into his mind, offering power in exchange for an oath broken. The air grew heavy, thick with ozone and ash. He saw the faces of fallen comrades twisting in the gloom, their eyes hollowed by ancient hunger. It was not an army that approached, but a presence unmaking reality itself—turning solid rock to shifting sand and a clear sky into a bruised purple void.

Reader's Guide

The campaigns of the Unmade are defined by the cyclical nature of the Desolations. In ancient times, conflict was straightforward: the Fused would return with their armies to reclaim Roshar every few thousand years. However, the cycle relied on the Heralds maintaining a fragile balance through their sacrifice. With Honor dead and the Oathpact broken, the True Desolation arrived without warning. The modern campaign differs fundamentally; rather than waiting for a set interval, Odium's forces infiltrate covertly, seeking to shatter human resolve before open warfare begins.
