Heralds
Ten immortal souls bound by a sacred pact to suffer eternally so humanity might survive.
The Heralds are ten immortal, god-like beings who established the ancient order of Knights Radiant to shield humanity from the Desolations. They serve as the living embodiment of the Oathpact, a binding agreement made between themselves and Odium that compels them to repeatedly endure torture in the realm of Damnation before returning to Roshar to lead the defense against the next Desolation.
Though revered as divine figures in Alethi culture and central to Vorinism, their true nature is far more tragic. They are not distant deities but weary warriors trapped in an endless cycle of suffering, each bearing a unique set of Virtues that define their character and their specific role within the ancient orders.

Lore & Background
Millennia ago, after the first Desolation nearly wiped out mankind on Roshar, the Almighty created ten champions from the human race. These individuals were granted immortality and immense power to lead the Knights Radiant in battle. To prevent a permanent victory for the enemy, they forged the Oathpact: a magical contract between themselves and Odium forcing them to surrender after each Desolation, endure centuries of agonizing torture in the void of Damnation, and then return to Roshar to warn of the next attack. This cycle repeated ten times over thousands of years, known as the Ten Desolations.
However, the ninth Desolation broke the pattern. The Heralds, driven mad by the cumulative trauma of their imprisonment in Damnation, began to abandon their posts one by one. Talenel'Elin, the Herald of War, remained trapped until his release during the events of Oathbringer, while the others fled or went into hiding on Roshar. This abandonment allowed the Desolation known as the True Desolation to begin, as the Heralds failed to return to lead the defense, leaving humanity vulnerable and forcing a new generation of Knights Radiant to rise without their divine commanders.
In Their Own Story
The wind howled across the battle-scarred Shattered Plains, carrying the scent of ozone and ancient dust. Talenel'Elin stood alone in the courtyard, his armor scarred beyond recognition, his eyes hollow with memories that no mortal mind could hold. He had returned from a thousand years of screaming silence, only to find his brothers gone. The sky above churned with highstorms, but he felt no relief, only the crushing weight of a promise broken by those he once called family. Somewhere in the distance, a new sound rose—not the roar of Voidbringers, but the desperate cries of a people who had forgotten their gods were supposed to come home.
Reader's Guide
The Heralds function as the spiritual and military backbone of Roshar's ancient history, serving as the founders of the Knights Radiant. Their primary goal was to maintain the Oathpact, ensuring that the Voidbringers could never permanently conquer the world. Each Herald represents a specific concept or Ideal, such as Leadership, Justice, or Valor, which corresponds to one of the ten orders of Radiants.
Historically, their role shifted from active commanders to sacrificial martyrs who bore the burden of eternity.

- Talenel'Elin was released from Damnation during the events of Oathbringer (Book 3), not before the start of The Way of Kings.
- The Heralds' names are often derived from ancient Alethi roots, reflecting their roles (e.g., Shalash is the Herald of Truth).
