Unmade
Ten corrupted spren serving Odium, each wielding a unique horror to shatter the world's soul.
The Unmade are ten ancient spren of Investiture twisted and corrupted by Odium into sentient forces of ruin. Unlike natural spren that reflect the ideals of Surgebinding or emotion, these entities embody distorted concepts—madness, terror, and decay. Serving as the Voidbringers' primary generals during the Desolations, they are not mindless beasts but strategic commanders capable of reshaping minds, warping reality within their domains, and directing vast armies of Fused.

Lore & Background
Bound by Odium's will yet driven by distinct personalities, the Unmade operate as specialized agents rather than a unified front. Some target specific individuals to corrupt them from within, while others seek to break the morale of entire armies through terror or madness. They are nearly immortal; destroying their physical forms merely sends their souls back into the Cognitive Realm (Shadesmar) to reform over time. Permanent removal requires complex rituals that bind or destroy their essence, a task historically performed by the Heralds and now undertaken by the Knights Radiant.
In Their Own Story
In the shattered palace of Kholinar, silence was heavier than stone. The air tasted of ozone and old blood as Elhokar sat upon his throne, eyes hollowed by whispers only he could hear. Envisager did not need a blade; he spoke from the shadows, echoing inside the King's mind with voices long dead. The soldiers in the courtyard froze, their weapons slipping from numb fingers as paranoia took root—neighbors turned on neighbors, convinced of invisible betrayals. There was no battle cry here, only the slow unraveling of sanity as the Unmade claimed another victory without drawing a sword.
Reader's Guide
The Unmade serve as the strategic vanguard of Odium's forces in The Stormlight Archive. Their objective is to facilitate the return of full Desolations by dismantling Roshar's defenses through psychological warfare, corruption, and targeted assassination.
Each member possesses a unique power set targeting specific aspects of life or magic—ranging from manipulating emotions to twisting physical laws. They act as specialized commanders rather than frontline soldiers, undermining enemy cohesion before the Fused engage. Their existence is cyclical; released when ancient seals weaken, they must be individually hunted and sealed by powerful rituals.
In the current timeline following the True Desolation, most known Unmade have been hunted down or permanently contained by Knights Radiant. However, their lingering influence persists as a constant threat, for if the old seals of Urithiru are ever fully broken, chaos could return to Roshar without warning.
Did You Know?
- The Unmade are not demons but corrupted spren, fundamentally distinct from the natural spren that bond with Surgebinders.
- Each Unmade bears a specific name or concept reflecting their domain of corruption; while Ash is known as 'The First,' others remain unnamed in published texts, and 'Envisager' is not a confirmed canonical title for an U
- Killing an Unmade temporarily banishes them to the Void; they will reform unless a ritual permanently binds or destroys their soul.
- Some theories suggest certain Unmade may have been original spren allies twisted by Odium's influence during ancient wars.
