Shards
Sixteen Living Intents, wielding the raw power to forge worlds or unmake them entirely.
Shards are the living fragments of Adonalsium, a singular entity whose shattering birthed the Cosmere. Seized by sixteen unknown beings, each fragment retained a portion of divine power and an underlying Intent, transforming them into fundamental forces rather than mere deities. From Honor to Odium, these entities govern specific aspects of existence across worlds, shaping reality through their will alone.

Lore & Background
The friction between Shards defines the magic systems of the Cosmere. When a Shard Invests its essence into a planet, it births unique phenomena—Surgebinding on Roshar, Allomancy on Scadrial—bound by rules dictated by that Shard's Intent. The eternal struggle between Honor and Odium drives Roshar's history, forging the Knights Radiant and summoning the Desolations. Beyond raw power, Shards may Splinter their energy into smaller manifestations: Spren, which act as the personified laws of nature or human emotion. This process is not unique to Odium; on Scadrial, Ruin and Preservation famously splintered each other, a catastrophic event that reshaped an entire world.
In Their Own Story
The wind howled through the shattered peaks, carrying the scent of ozone and the distant rumble of a highstorm. Kaladin stood atop the tower, his eyes fixed on the horizon where the stormwall approached. He felt it before he saw it—a pressure in the air, a weight that pressed against his soul. It was not just the weather; it was the presence of Honor, fading yet still lingering in the ancient oaths etched into the stone beneath his feet. Beside him, a small, glowing spren flickered into existence, its form shifting between a spear and a shield. 'The old gods are gone,' the spren whispered, its voice like wind through reeds. 'But their power remains, waiting for those brave enough to speak the words.' Kaladin gripped his sword, feeling the surge of Stormlight fill him, a reminder that even in the absence of the Vessel, the Shard's will could still be felt by those who chose to stand against the darkness.
Reader's Guide
Shards serve as the source of all Investiture, the fuel behind every magical system in the Cosmere. To wield a Shard's power, a mortal must align their mind with its Intent—a process that often demands adopting specific philosophies or behaviors, such as swearing oaths for Honor or pursuing growth for Cultivation.
These mechanics bridge the Physical, Cognitive, and Spiritual Realms. On Roshar, Shards like Honor and Odium birthed Spren, enabling Nahel bonds that grant Surgebinding through sworn Ideals. If a Vessel dies, the power seeks a new host, though this transfer is perilous; without sufficient resolve, the Shard's Intent can overwhelm the mind, twisting the new holder into a slave of its purpose.
Wielding a Shard's power is not without consequence; the Vessel risks being slowly consumed by the very purpose they seek to uphold.
