The Stormlight Archive Codex

Unmade

Reborn from the void to break minds, shatter oaths, and end the cycle of hope.

The Unmade are sentient fragments of Odium's will—ancient generals of the Voidbringers who served as the architects of ruin during the Desolations. Sealed by the Heralds and Knights Radiant in the First Desolation, they were reconstituted by Odium millennia later to resume their war against mankind. Unlike mere Shades or Fused, each Unmade possesses a distinct personality and supernatural abilities tailored to specific forms of destruction, united by a profound loathing for humanity's stubborn resilience.

Lore & Background

The Unmade are inextricably bound to the essence of the Voidbringers' power. They function not as mindless beasts, but as intelligent strategists who exploit the flaws in human society and the Radiant's oaths. While some remain sealed within ancient traps or specific locations, others—like Sja-anat—have operated freely for centuries, subtly twisting spren to create dangerous, unstable counterparts of their natural allies. Their resurgence signals that the Final Desolation is no longer a mythic warning but an approaching reality, threatening to erase the memory of the Heralds' sacrifices entirely.

In Their Own Story

In the shadowed chasms where stormlight struggles to pierce the gloom, witnesses describe the air growing heavy with suffocating dread. Spren flicker and dim as a presence descends, not merely stepping from shadows but coalescing from smoke and jagged glass. There is no voice in the throat; instead, a chorus of whispers erupts directly within the mind, offering freedom from pain in exchange for surrender. The world drains of color, turning into a monochrome nightmare where limbs refuse to obey and terror becomes absolute—a testament to their power over both matter and spirit.

Reader's Guide

The Unmade function as specialized agents of destruction, each wielding unique supernatural abilities that target specific aspects of life on Roshar. They rarely rely on standard physical combat; instead, they manipulate the environment and the minds of those around them. One might induce a battle frenzy in an entire army, while another corrupts the very spren that grant powers to knights, turning allies into monsters.

In terms of mechanics within the world, these entities are incredibly difficult to defeat permanently. Physical destruction often fails because they can reform from their splintered parts unless specific ancient rituals or powerful magical bonds are used to trap them again. They require the cooperation of Fused (the souls of dead Voidbringers) to fully manifest in the physical realm, creating a symbiotic relationship where the Fused provide the body and the Unmade provides the terrifying power.

Wielding an Unmade is not possible for humans; they are forces of nature that must be contained or destroyed. However, understanding their specific weakness is crucial for survival. Some can be banished by breaking their connection to a specific object or location, while others require the combined might of multiple Knights Radiant to shatter their essence permanently.
