Bondsmiths
They weave the threads of unity, binding worlds and souls against the coming darkness.
The Bondsmiths stand apart from the ten orders of Knights Radiant—not as warriors wielding elemental fury, but as living bridges between humanity and the divine. Bound exclusively to Honorspren, they forgo the sharp edges of combat for the delicate art of unification. Their power lies not in breaking lines or summoning weapons, but in weaving the fractured souls of Roshar back together, serving as the spiritual glue that holds a world on the brink of collapse.

Lore & Background
In an age before the Desolations tore the world apart, Bondsmiths were the unseen architects of unity. They did not march to the front lines; instead, they walked among kings and commoners alike, ensuring the other Radiant orders remained true to their oaths. Legends whisper that a single Bondsmith could still a raging highstorm with a word or bridge the hatred between warring nations through sheer force of will. When the order vanished during the Last Desolation, Roshar's spiritual fabric unraveled, leaving a void that allowed the Voidbringers to return.
Today, the order has awakened in two distinct forms: Dalinar Kholin, the Blackthorn, who uses his connection to unite fractured Alethi kingdoms against an existential threat; and the Stormfather himself, an ancient Honorspren bound to Urithiru, acting as a living guardian between the physical and Cognitive Realms. Though separated by power and presence, both serve the same purpose: to mend what is broken.
In Their Own Story
The wind screamed through the Shattered Plains, carrying the metallic tang of ozone and the promise of rain. Dalinar stood at the precipice, his eyes closed as he reached outward with a mind that felt vast, heavy, and terrible. The world around him dissolved; stone and grass gave way to a living tapestry of glowing threads. He saw them everywhere—connections binding soul to soul, land to storm, fear to courage.
A Honorspren hovered before him, its form shifting like liquid light, reflecting the intensity of his own resolve.
Reader's Guide
The Bondsmiths are the spiritual architects of the Knights Radiant, tasked with maintaining the unity and integrity of Roshar's society. Unlike other orders that specialize in warfare or specific crafts, the Bondsmiths focus on the metaphysical connections between people, places, and ideas. Their primary goal is to prevent the fragmentation of humanity, which they believe makes the world vulnerable to the Voidbringers.
Currently, the order consists of only a few known members, including King Dalinar Kholin and the ancient spren known as the Sibling. These individuals operate from Urithiru or travel across the Shattered Plains, acting as mediators, leaders, and unifiers. They utilize their Surges of Tension (manipulating physical connections) and Connection (understanding and influencing relationships) to resolve conflicts and prepare for the final Desolation.
In the ongoing conflict against Odium and his forces, the Bondsmiths play a pivotal role. Their ability to unite disparate factions is crucial for forming a coalition strong enough to withstand the coming storm. They are often the ones who must make the hardest decisions, sacrificing personal desires for the greater good of all Rosharans. As the only order capable of bonding multiple spren and bridging the gap between the physical and spiritual realms, they hold the key to the survival of their world.
Did You Know?
- Bondsmiths are the only known Knights Radiant capable of bonding multiple spren simultaneously, including both Honorspren and other entities like the Stormfather.
- For thousands of years prior to the events of *The Stormlight Archive*, the order was believed to be completely extinct, leaving Roshar without its spiritual unifiers.
- Their Surges—Tension and Connection—allow them to manipulate the physical tension between objects (creating bridges) and the metaphysical connections between people (translating languages or sharing emotions).
- Unlike other orders whose oaths focus on specific martial skills or elemental mastery, Bondsmith oaths revolve around abstract, all-encompassing concepts: Unity, Truth, and the preservation of life.
